“The largest electric sign south of New York City” That’s what they boasted back in the day. Right here before you stands the Rialto Center for the Arts. Can you imagine the glow it cast across downtown Atlanta?
The Rialto Center for the Arts didn’t always look like this. Its story begins in 1916. A grand 925-seat movie theater opened its doors. It was the Southeast’s largest. They called it the Rialto a name meaning marketplace.
For decades the Rialto thrived even surviving the Great Depression. But times changed. By 1989 a struggling downtown Atlanta left it vacant. A real estate consultant had a vision. Georgia State University needed space. The university launched an ambitious $14 million fundraising campaign.
The old building was demolished. A new Rialto was built in its place. This time it would be a performing arts center. The architects made a crucial change. They raised the roof 12 feet. The result superb acoustics.
In March 1996 the Rialto Center for the Arts reopened its doors. Today it offers an impressive 833 seats. The center hosts world-class performances. It includes the Rialto Series featuring international jazz world music and dance. The Rialto also welcomes Georgia State University’s School of Music performances. Plus it’s a popular venue for groups like the National Black Arts Festival and the True Colors Theatre Company. The Rialto even developed a jazz education program for younger students.
The Haas-Howell Building stands nearby. It houses the Rialto’s backstage facilities and administrative offices. The Dahlberg Room the theater’s green room provides a relaxing space for performers. The Rialto also showcases visual arts. The lobby regularly transforms into an exhibition space. The Rialto presents visual arts exhibitions related to its performances or citywide arts events.
The Rialto Center for the Arts is more than just a performance space. It’s a testament to the resilience of Atlanta. It’s a place where history artistry and education converge. It continues to shine brightly. This is a space that makes dreams a reality for performers and an unforgettable experience for audiences. So soak in the atmosphere. Enjoy the magic of the Rialto.
