In 1901, a trio of determined Catholic figures arrived in Roskilde. Pater A. Kerckhoffs, Pater Blois, and Brother Bonifatius, members of the Compagnie de Marie, had a vision. They wanted to establish a Catholic presence in the city, a presence that had been absent since the Reformation in 1536. Their first step was a modest chapel, consecrated in a repurposed stable in 1902. This humble beginning paved the way for something greater. The Skt. Laurentii Kirke, a testament to their dedication, began to take shape in 1913. Dutch architect Jacob van Gils designed the church. The Skt. Laurentii Kirke was officially inaugurated on April 19, 1914, by Bishop Johannes von Euch. Tragedy struck in 1940 when a fire damaged the Skt. Laurentii Kirke. However, the church was restored, continuing its mission as a spiritual haven. Today, the Skt. Laurentii Kirke remains an active part of the Roskilde community. It holds regular masses in Danish, as well as services in Polish and English. This vibrant church stands as a symbol of resilience and faith, a beacon for the Catholic community in Roskilde.
