Born in Saxony, Germany in 1837, Ziller came to Athens in 1861. He was invited by Danish architect Theophilus Hansen. Hansen needed Ziller to supervise the Academy of Athens construction. Ziller’s talent and vision quickly became apparent.

He designed and oversaw nearly 500 buildings in Greece. This happened between 1870 and 1916. Ziller blended Neoclassical style with German influences. He also respected Greek architectural traditions.

Ziller’s Athens transformation is remarkable. Athens was a decaying village in 1834. It became the capital of the Kingdom of Greece. Ziller bestowed a European color upon the city. He made Athens his lifelong home.

He supervised the construction of the National Library. Ziller also supervised the Zappeion Hall, both designed by Hansen. Ziller’s fascination with ancient Greece deeply influenced his work. He studied the Parthenon. He studied the Erechtheion. He incorporated their features into his designs.

Consider the Presidential Mansion. Ziller designed it. Think of the National Theatre of Greece. Ziller also designed that. His buildings define the cityscape.

Ziller didn’t just build in Athens. He left his mark across Greece. You can find his works in Thessaloniki. Also in Patras, Pyrgos, Tripoli and Ermoupoli.

He designed churches. Saint Gregory Palamas in Thessaloniki for example. He also designed municipal markets and more.

Ziller became a professor of architecture in 1872. He taught at the School of Arts. Later, he became Director of Public Works. King George I appointed him.

Ziller married Sofia Doudou, a Greek musician. They had five children. One daughter, Iosifina Dimas-Ziller, became an impressionist painter.

Ernst Ziller died in Athens in 1923. He was buried at the First Cemetery of Athens. Ziller’s legacy is visible all around us. He transformed Athens into a modern metropolis. His ability to blend European trends with Greek identity is unmatched.

So, as you wander through Athens remember Ernst Ziller. He shaped the city we experience today. The Κτήριο Τσίλλερ stands as a reminder of his enduring impact. It is an architectural arts center reflecting the master’s touch.
