After the Civil War’s end in 1949, Beloyannis went to socialist countries. In 1950, he secretly returned to Greece. He aimed to reorganize the underground party network. However, he was arrested with the aid of the CIA.

Beloyannis faced extraordinary trials on charges of violating laws against communist propaganda. Despite international outcry, he was sentenced to death. A second trial accused him of espionage. He used these trials to denounce his accusers.

His defense speeches echoed his unwavering belief in his ideals. He proclaimed love for Greece and its people. He emphasized the struggle for a better future. He accepted sacrificing his life for his beliefs.

An international campaign arose. Figures like Picasso and Chaplin demanded his release. Yet, the US demanded his execution. King Pavlos rejected clemency.

On March 30, 1952, Nikos Beloyannis and three comrades were executed. The executions happened under the lights of military vehicles. His death sparked outrage. He became known as “the man with the carnation.”

The image of Beloyannis holding a carnation became iconic. It symbolizes his courage. It shows his defiance in the face of injustice. The carnation represents his unwavering spirit.
