Why does this building bear the name Vielberth-Gebäude? It stands as a testament to progress at the University of Regensburg. This four-story building is north of the “Wirtschaft & Recht” area. It marks architectural advancement since the university’s early construction.

The Vielberth-Gebäude was completed in May 2011. It provides 3,757 square meters of main usable space. The Free State of Bavaria financed it with 12.9 million euros. The University’s foundation contributed 3.0 million euros.

This building is home to the IREBS International Real Estate Business School. The IREBS boasts its own real estate institute and academy. It houses eight law and economics professorships. Eleven honorary and guest professorships also reside here.

The IREBS offers executive education. This caters to junior executives and specialists. Locations include Kloster Eberbach, Frankfurt, Berlin, Munich, Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Vienna.

Notably, the German University Foundation awarded the Vielberth-Gebäude the German University Building Prize in 2012. Frankfurt architect Ferdinand Heide designed it. Its timeless wood lattice evokes Alvar Aalto.

The University of Regensburg decided to construct the Vielberth-Gebäude in 1962. However, the completion of the building took a while. The structure was not operational until 2011.

The University of Regensburg has a long history. Duke Albrecht IV of Bavaria sought to found a university in Regensburg around 1480. Political conditions thwarted his efforts. A second attempt after World War II failed due to Bavaria’s financial strain.

The city, region and a university association finally succeeded. The association was founded in 1948. The university officially began in 1967. At that time, there were only 35 professors. 661 students attended three faculties.

Over time, the university expanded. New buildings for various departments were constructed. These included science, sports and administration. The central lecture hall, library and computer center soon followed.

The Vielberth-Gebäude symbolizes modern growth. It stands in contrast to the university’s initial exposed concrete structures. The building demonstrates modern architectural style. It serves as a hub for real estate studies. This modern facility enriches Regensburg’s academic landscape.

So as you continue your tour of Regensburg, remember the Vielberth-Gebäude. It is a symbol of progress. It is also a place of learning. It connects the city’s past with its future.
