Galgenberg. The very name evokes images of gallows and executions. For centuries this was the site of Regensburg’s high court. Here criminals faced their final judgment. Their lives ended on the gallows. This place of death is now a vibrant hub of learning.
Imagine the scene. A strong stone structure. About 7 meters long and almost 4 meters high. Four corner pillars supported the crossbeams. Hooks hung from them. The executioner plied his grim trade here. Regensburg’s coat of arms adorned the gallows itself. A stark reminder of the city’s authority. A chilling public display. The gallows stood until 1803. Prince-Bishop Karl Theodor von Dalberg ordered its demolition. Regensburg was no longer a free imperial city. It was now part of the Principality of Regensburg. Seven years later Bavaria absorbed the principality.
Today. Little remains of the gruesome past. Yet the echoes linger. The names of the streets themselves whisper history. Haydnstrasse and Galgenbergstrasse. The beginning of Regerstrasse. These streets are close to where the gallows once stood. Medieval drawings and later engravings depict the structure’s appearance. The Galgenberg is now home to much more than just memories of the past. The Evangelical Central Cemetery. Established in 1897-98 by Richard Erhardt and Conrad Mayer. The Catholic Cemetery of the Upper Town. Created in 1909 by Heinrich Hauberrisser. These cemeteries rest peacefully alongside the University of Regensburg and the Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Regensburg. Both institutions enrich this historical site with life and learning.
