What if I told you that this seemingly natural landscape was once a wasteland? Welcome to Tuckers Beach Wildlife Management Reserve. It is a testament to the power of community and conservation.

Once upon a time this 150-hectare area was degraded. It was a dumping ground for cars and rubbish. Noxious weeds like broom and lupins had taken over. People felt unsafe here.

But a group of local residents had a vision. They formed the Friends of Tuckers Beach Wildlife Reserve. Their goal was to restore the biodiversity of this special area.

The Friends of Tuckers Beach Wildlife Reserve wanted to protect endangered species. They wanted to bring back native vegetation and wildlife. They aimed to create corridors for native birds insects and lizards.

Fast forward to today and Tuckers Beach Wildlife Management Reserve is a thriving ecosystem. It is home to rare birds like the black-fronted tern and the black-billed gull. The banded dotterel population is growing here.

The transformation involved many hands and a lot of hard work. DoC helped remove car wrecks and rubbish. Volunteers planted thousands of native plants. A predator control program was established. Over 80 traps protect the area. They target mustelids rats hedgehogs and cats.

The Kimiākau is identified as Wāhi Tūpuna. It is part of the extensive network of kāika mahika kai. These are food gathering places. They are traditional travel routes throughout Central Otago. Restoring the mauri of this site is a key focus.

Today new walking routes and trails wind through the reserve. Over seven kilometers of trails let you explore this amazing area. Eighteen hectares have been cleared of weeds and rubbish. Over 25000 native plants have been planted. The reserve has seen the removal of over 750 pests and predators.

As you walk along the Queenstown Trail keep an eye out for native birds. Remember to stay on the marked trails. Keep dogs on leads especially during nesting season from August to February. This protects the birds.

The Friends of Tuckers Beach Wildlife Reserve ask that you respect this area. It is a special ecological treasure. It is a valuable community conservation area.

So next time you are in Queenstown take a stroll through Tuckers Beach Wildlife Management Reserve. Take a moment to appreciate the incredible transformation. See how a wasteland became a wildlife haven. It is a story of dedication restoration and the enduring power of community action.
