Ever felt the spray of the Shotover River on your face?

Picture this You’re hurtling through the heart of Queenstown’s dramatic canyons aboard a Shotover Jet. This isn’t just any boat ride. It’s a legendary adventure.

Shotover Jet isn’t just a jet boat company. It’s a piece of New Zealand history. It all started in 1960 with kiwi inventor Bill Hamilton’s Jet Unit. The Melhop brothers saw its potential. They launched a world-first commercial jet boat service on the Shotover River. Their initial goal was to raise money for Christian Youth Camps.

By 1965 Shotover Jet was officially open for business. Operating from Arthurs Point they offered thrilling rides through the canyons. Their fiberglass Jet 30 boats each carried just five passengers. Yet they still managed to carry 1480 passengers that very first year. Imagine the excitement.

Ownership changed hands a few times. Herm Palmer then Trevor Gamble guided the company before Armada Holdings Ltd purchased Shotover Jet in 1986. It even became a publicly traded company on the New Zealand Stock Exchange in 1993. In 1999 Ngai Tahu Holdings became a major shareholder. Today Shotover Jet is proudly 100% New Zealand owned and operated by Ngai Tahu Holdings.

Safety was always paramount. In 1987 the Shotover River Empowering Act granted Shotover Jet exclusive rights to operate in the canyons. No other company is allowed to offer this unique experience.

Shotover Jet’s commitment to excellence has earned them numerous accolades. They received the New Zealand Tourism Supreme Award and the Best Visitor Attraction Award in 1993. Judges praised Shotover Jet for epitomizing adventure tourism in New Zealand. Their red jet boats are internationally recognized as a symbol of New Zealand tourism.

The company continuously innovates. Between 2002 and 2004 they invested significantly in a new fleet of twin-engine jet boats replacing their single-engine predecessors. They also implemented world-class safety and maintenance procedures.

These efforts resulted in more awards. In 2004 and 2005 Shotover Jet won prestigious awards at the New Zealand Tourism Awards. Judges recognized their constant technical improvements and commitment to staff. They called it a model tourism business an absolute icon of New Zealand tourism.

Since 1965 Shotover Jet has become a leader in adventure tourism. By 2003 they had carried their two millionth passenger. Their third millionth passenger took a ride in May 2011. An incredible 98% of customers say their experience met or exceeded their expectations.

From humble beginnings to an iconic status Shotover Jet is a ‘must-do’ experience. It’s more than just a ride. It’s a testament to New Zealand’s spirit of adventure. And here you are ready for your own unforgettable journey on the Shotover Jet. Enjoy the ride.
