Ever wondered what it’s like to land in a bowl of mountains? Queenstown Airport, nestled amidst dramatic peaks, offers just that. Queenstown Airport earned the title of “World’s Most Scenic Airport Landing” in 2015. And it’s easy to see why. The airport, officially Queenstown International Airport, sits in Frankton, Otago, serving the bustling resort town of Queenstown. In 2024, this airport, the fourth busiest in New Zealand, handled a staggering 2.1 million passengers. Imagine navigating a plane through this terrain. It’s a challenge even for experienced pilots, demanding precision and expertise due to the high terrain and proximity to housing. Queenstown Airport’s history begins in 1935. It wasn’t until the 1950s, however, that commercial flights, particularly sightseeing trips to Milford Sound, became common. Southern Scenic Air Services Ltd. established a regular route between Queenstown and Dunedin in 1950. Mount Cook Airline pioneered tourist flights to Queenstown. Regular services from Christchurch started in 1961, with DC-3s flying three times a week. Queenstown Airport embraced the jet age in 1989 when Ansett New Zealand introduced British Aerospace 146 aircraft. A few years later, in 1995, Air New Zealand launched the airport’s first trans-Tasman flight from Sydney. This marked the start of continuous expansion to meet growing demand. In 2010, runway lighting was installed to improve visibility, a significant upgrade for an airport previously reliant on daylight operations. The airspace was redesigned in 2012 to allow for Required Navigation Performance, Authorization Required (RNP AR) operations, further enhancing safety and efficiency. Queenstown Airport even boasts a sealed crosswind runway, completed in 2012 after ten months of work. A new $17 million international terminal opened in 2015, doubling the size of international operations. Further airfield improvements followed in 2015, paving the way for after-dark flights, a major development given the challenging terrain. Finally, in 2016, the airport’s runway lights were officially switched on, extending operational hours and marking a significant milestone in Queenstown Airport’s evolution.
