Has the sand always been there, or did it rise to meet the fingers? The Hand of Punta del Este rises from the beach, a silent sentinel against the crashing waves. Created by Chilean artist Mario Irarrázabal, The Hand, or “Los Dedos” as it’s known locally, has become an iconic symbol of Punta del Este.

In the summer of 1982, Irarrázabal was the youngest artist invited to participate in a prestigious sculpture exhibition. Instead of fighting for space in the town square, he chose the beach as his canvas. Working quickly, he completed The Hand in just six days, using a combination of concrete, plastic, and steel.

Though some believe the sculpture represents a drowning man, Irarrázabal intended it as a warning to swimmers about the strong currents. Over the years, The Hand has faced its share of challenges, from graffiti artists to the relentless ocean winds. Yet, it still stands, a testament to human creativity and the enduring power of art. Just like the tides that ebb and flow, The Hand remains a constant presence, inviting contemplation and wonder.
