Why is Humedal Urbano La Marina so special? Let’s uncover the story of this unique urban wetland. The Ministry of the Environment officially recognized Humedal Urbano La Marina on August 9th, 2023. This was a momentous occasion, marking it as the first officially recognized urban wetland in Puerto Varas. The journey to recognition began in February of the same year. Local experts, led by Joaquín Aguirre Araya, conducted a study of the wetland. The Fundación El Respiro commissioned the study and then made it available to the municipality. The municipality, in turn, submitted it to the Ministry of the Environment. The official recognition document describes Humedal Urbano La Marina as a natural, riverine, marsh, and lake wetland. It’s part of the sub-basin of Lake Llanquihue and its tributaries. It covers approximately 2.3 hectares and is partially located within the urban limit of Puerto Varas. Joaquín Aguirre, a driving force behind this declaration, emphasized the importance of this protection. He highlighted the wetland’s rich biodiversity and its role in water purification. He noted its significance within the bay of Puerto Varas, an area impacted by climate change. Humedal Urbano La Marina stands as a testament to community effort and environmental stewardship. It’s a vital ecosystem for the region and a symbol of hope for a sustainable future.
