Was it fate or fortune that shaped Classical Athens into the cradle of Western civilization? Classical Athens, a city whose influence echoes through millennia. Today, we stand where democracy took root.

Classical Athens rose to prominence between 480 and 323 BC. This era saw Athens become the major urban center. It led the Delian League against Sparta in the Peloponnesian War. Athenian democracy began in 508 BC thanks to Cleisthenes. His reforms replaced old tribal structures with ten new ones. Each tribe chose fifty members for the Boule. This council managed Athens daily. The Assembly, or Ecclesia, was open to all citizens. It acted as both legislature and supreme court.

The silver mines of Laurion boosted Athens significantly. Athenians learned to extract and refine the ore. They used the wealth to build a large fleet. In 499 BC, Athens aided Ionian Greeks against the Persian Empire. This sparked Persian invasions of Greece. Athenian leaders like Miltiades and Themistocles repelled these invasions. In 490 BC, Athenians defeated the Persians at Marathon. In 480 BC, Xerxes returned. The Greeks fought delaying actions at Thermopylae and Artemisium. The Athenian navy then defeated the Persians at Salamis.

Victories allowed Athens to form the Delian League. This Athenian-dominated alliance controlled much of the Aegean. Pericles led Athens from 448 to 430 BC. He fostered arts and literature. Athens achieved unmatched splendor during this time. Many public works projects improved citizens lives. This period is known as the Age of Pericles. Silver from Laurium funded this golden age.

The Parthenon, a temple for Athena, was built under Pericles. Resentment against Athens grew and led to the Peloponnesian War in 431 BC. Athens and its rebellious sea empire fought Sparta and its allies. The war ended Athenian sea dominance. Athenian democracy was briefly overthrown in 411 BC. It was soon restored. The war concluded with Athens defeat in 404 BC.

Sparta’s allies turned against it. Athens enemies, Thebes and Corinth, became its allies. They fought Sparta in the Corinthian War. In 378 BC, Athens formed the Second Athenian League. Thebes defeated Sparta in 371 BC. But other Greek cities turned against Thebes. Its dominance ended at the Battle of Mantinea in 362 BC.

By the mid-4th century BC, Macedon gained influence. In 338 BC, Philip II defeated Athens. This limited Athenian independence. Alexander the Greats conquests widened Greek horizons. The traditional city-state became obsolete. In 322 BC, Antipater dissolved the Athenian government. He created a plutocratic system. Athens remained wealthy but lost its independence.

Classical Athens stood in Attica. It was near the sea on Mount Lycabettus slope. The city was rebuilt after being burnt by Xerxes. Cimon and Pericles adorned it with public buildings. At its peak, Athens held over 10,000 houses. The city consisted of the Upper City, or Acropolis, and the Lower City. Walls connected Athens to the port of Piraeus.

The Acropolis was a steep rock in the city center. It housed temples and statues. The Parthenon honored Athena. The Erechtheion contained temples to Athena Polias and others.
