Kutschpferdestall

Have you ever wondered what happened to the royal carriages of the Prussian kings after they were no longer in use? Right in front of you, stands the Kutschpferdestall, the former stable for the royal coach horses. The Kutschpferdestall, often simply called Kutschstall, is a historical gem located in the heart of Potsdam on the Neuer Markt. This beautiful building wasn’t always a museum. It was built in the late 18th century by the renowned architect Andreas Ludwig Krüger in the classical style. The Kutschpferdestall boasts a grand facade with an impressive portal crowned by a Quadriga, a four-horse chariot. Standing proudly next to the Quadriga are sculpted figures depicting the coachmen and stable boys at work. This building was once home to 100 royal horses. The stable boys and foremen lived in the lower floor of the building. On the courtyard, there were special sheds, called Remisen, for storing the royal carriages. Today, the Kutschpferdestall is used by the Brandenburg Museum, which tells the fascinating story of Brandenburg-Prussia and its history. Take a moment to admire the Quadriga and its surrounding sculptures before you walk inside the Kutschpferdestall. It is truly a sight to behold.
