His surname was then expanded to Schulze-Delitzsch to avoid confusion with other Schulzes. He was a member of the Left Centre. He became deeply concerned about the plight of smaller tradespeople. His solution was ingenious. He created the Vorschussvereine peoples banks. These were essentially the first credit unions in the world. The first one was established in Delitzsch in 1850.
