“A marvel of mid-19th century technology” This is the Schlossküche at Sanssouci Palace. King Friedrich Wilhelm IV loved good food. He transformed the palace’s east wing into a magnificent kitchen. It wasn’t just any kitchen. Oh no. This Schlossküche boasted a “cooking machine” a technological marvel for its time. Imagine a stove with multiple heating plates. No more open fires. This innovation improved safety and made meal preparation for the royal court much more efficient. The kitchen was equipped with copper cookware porcelain pots and pans and all sorts of tools. You can still see these today. The royal cooks and kitchen staff lived on the upper floor right above their workspace. The palace cellar originally Frederick the Great’s wine cellar was also expanded. It included storerooms a dishwashing area a patisserie and an ice cream-making section.
