Ah the Roman Baths of Potsdam a whimsical dream in stone. Before you stands a testament to King Frederick William IV’s passionate love for Italy. This is no ordinary bathhouse. It’s a romantic fantasy brought to life.

Built between 1829 and 1840 the Roman Baths reflect the king’s Italiensehnsucht his longing for Italy. Architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel designed this enchanting ensemble. Ludwig Persius one of Schinkel’s students oversaw construction.

The king was deeply involved. He provided numerous ideas and sketches. He heavily influenced the final design. The result is a delightful blend of Roman and Italian styles. The buildings are interconnected by charming pergolas and lush gardens. The entire complex including a small tea pavilion evokes a nostalgic Italian landscape.

Notice the names of the rooms. They’re a clever mix. Atrium is the reception area. The Impluvium actually a rainwater collector names an entire room. Viridarium is a greenhouse a small garden oasis. There is also an Apodyterium a changing room and a Caldarium a warm bath. Intriguing isn’t it?

Never actually used as a bathhouse the Roman Baths are purely a romantic creation. A symbol of the king’s idealized vision of Italy. It’s a picturesque setting. The baths sit on the edge of an artificial lake. The so-called Maschinenteich Machine Pond. This lake was part of Peter Joseph Lenné’s landscaping.

The lake’s name derives from a former steam engine building and pumping station. Demolished in 1923 a large well marks the spot. The steam engine not only circulated the lake’s water. It also symbolized the progress of its time.
