What secrets does this villa hold? You are standing before Villa Quandt, a stately home in Potsdam’s Nauener Vorstadt. It has a long and storied past, a place where power and privilege once played out. Built around 1800, its oldest structural evidence dates back to that time. The villa was named after Ulrika Augusta von Quandt, a war councilor who acquired the property in 1833, but sold it only two years later. However, the villa’s significance goes beyond its former owner. It became a royal residence in 1841. Villa Quandt was integrated into the Pfingstberg park in 1860. Then, Prince Oskar Karl Gustav Adolf of Prussia, the fifth son of Wilhelm II, took up residence.
But the story of Villa Quandt does not end happily. After the Soviet occupation of Potsdam in 1945, it was located in a restricted military area and became a headquarters of the military administration known as Military Town No. 7. It is not even known how Villa Quandt was used during this time. After the withdrawal of the Soviet army in 1993, the villa was left abandoned and fell into disrepair. Luckily, it was rescued and restored by the Theodor Fontane Archive. The Hermann Reemtsma Foundation in Hamburg and the European Fund for Regional Development funded the restoration. The building became ready for occupancy in September 2007 and is now home to the Fontane Archive and the Brandenburg Literature Office. Villa Quandt is a reminder of the tumultuous history of Potsdam. But thanks to restoration efforts, this stately home has been given a second chance, continuing to offer a glimpse into the city’s past.
