“A thousand-year-old oak? Right here in the gardens?” you might ask, your voice echoing with a touch of disbelief. You’re standing before Schloss Sacrow, a grand estate that exudes an air of quiet dignity. This architectural gem, nestled amidst the picturesque landscape of Potsdam, has witnessed centuries of history unfold. The story of Schloss Sacrow begins in the 14th century with a simple mention, a mere whisper of its existence in historical records. It wasn’t until 1773 that it began to take its present form thanks to the vision of Johann Ludwig von Hordt, a Swedish general. He saw the potential in this idyllic spot and erected a stately manor house, its symmetrical design reflecting the elegance of the Baroque era. Over the years, Schloss Sacrow passed through the hands of various owners, each leaving their mark on this historic place. But it was King Frederick William IV who truly elevated Schloss Sacrow from a manor house to a royal residence. Purchased in 1840, the King commissioned the renowned architect Ludwig Persius to remodel the house, adding a touch of Italianate flair to its façade.
