Have you ever noticed the obelisk, standing proudly in the heart of Potsdam? Not just any obelisk, mind you, but one with a rich past and even more impressive history.

This monument, built in 1753, is a masterpiece of the renowned architect Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff. It was part of Frederick the Great’s ambitious plan to make Potsdam into a cosmopolitan city, showcasing architectural styles from around the globe, from French to Italian, Russian, English, Turkish, Chinese, Egyptian, even Australian.

During one of his trips to Italy, King Frederick the Great was captivated by the ancient obelisks brought from Egypt by the Romans. Knobelsdorff was tasked with creating a similar obelisk, this time featuring a Roman twist, to adorn Potsdam. The obelisk is made of sandstone and marble, with intricate sphynx figures and medallions.

Interestingly, the medallions that originally depicted Prussian kings changed after World War II. They now honor four prominent architects who helped shape Potsdam’s landscape: Karl Friedrich Schinkel, Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff, Friedrich Ludwig Persius, and Carl Phillip Christian von Gontard.

So, next time you find yourself in Potsdam, take a moment to stand in front of the Obelisk. Remember the stories it holds, the changing faces it reflects, and the grand vision for a cosmopolitan city that it embodies. Its history might just inspire you to discover more of the gems hidden in this fascinating city.
