Born in Porto in 1620, Padre Baltazar Guedes established the Colégio dos Meninos Órfãos, a home and school, in 1651. This wasn’t an easy feat. He used his personal funds and crafted religious ornaments to sell, all to support his endeavor. He even embarked on a pilgrimage throughout Portugal, a young orphan by his side, to gather alms for his cause.
