Granite whispers tales here at Quinta do Rio. It is a story etched in stone and time. Quinta do Rio, also known as Quinta do Viso, stands as a testament to Porto’s rich agricultural past. It’s located in the Ramalde parish. This quinta embodies the structure of the region’s agricultural houses from the 17th century.

The estate features a manor house. It also has a chapel, an era or threshing floor, and agricultural production and drying facilities. The palatial building stands out. Its granite balconies add character. The 18th-century chapel is especially noteworthy.

Dating back to 1764, the chapel is dedicated to Santo António. This iconic symbol of Quinta do Rio has a single nave. Granite pillars adorn the portal. They end in volutes near the base. Two polylobate oculi are on each side. They are topped with acanthus leaves. An inscription reads: ESTA CAPE/ LA MANDOU / FAZER O CAPITAM/ MANOEL DA SILVA GUIM(arães)/ 1764. It tells of Captain Manoel da Silva Guimarães.

Quinta do Rio belonged to the Silva Guimarães family. Later, it passed through succession and inheritance. It became the property of the Pinto de Azevedo Meireles family. They were Lords of the House and Morgado das Virtudes in Porto.

Imagine life in the 17th century here. Picture farmers working the land. They are drying their crops in the sun. Consider the Silva Guimarães family attending mass in the chapel. It must have been a place of faith and community.

Today, Quinta do Rio stands as a reminder. It recalls Porto’s agricultural heritage. Its architectural details tell stories of bygone eras. The chapel’s inscription connects us to the people who lived and worked here. The Quinta do Rio offers a peek into the past. It is an interesting view into the lives of Porto’s families.
