Chapel of São José das Taipas. A church with a modest facade and a low bell tower. Its construction began in 1795, but due to social and political unrest, the Capela de São José das Taipas wasn’t completed until 1878. Architect Carlos Cruz Amarante designed this Neoclassical gem. Inside the Capela de São José das Taipas, gilded altars line the nave. A balcony with iron railings adds to its charm. Four side altars, dedicated to health, conception, Our Lady of Sorrows, and Saint Anthony, stand behind the main altar. The chapel itself, along with some interior elements, predates the church. These elements date back to 1666. Capela de São José das Taipas houses Porto’s oldest Nativity Scene, an 18th-century piece attributed to the School of Machado de Castro. The chapel also displays a painting from 1845 depicting the Barcas Bridge disaster. This tragic event, during the French invasion of 1809, deeply impacted Porto. The Brotherhood of Almas de São José das Taipas, associated with the church, traditionally prayed for the souls lost in the disaster. A painting of Our Lady of Divine Providence, by the German School, enriches the chapel’s artistic heritage. A museum and catacombs beneath the chancel offer information in Portuguese, Spanish, and English. Capela de São José das Taipas stands as a testament to Porto’s rich history.
