Centuries whisper here at Quinta de Baixo. This isn’t just a place it’s a story etched in stone and terroir. Quinta de Baixo stands as a testament to Portugal’s rich heritage. It blends architectural ambition with vinicultural passion.
Quinta de Baixo started as a manor. Now it has evolved into something truly special. Imagine the original manor. Picture its uncharacterized carcass. Now envision a new volume set inside using the old structure as a starting point. That was the idea behind the headquarters extension for the Porto Water Department.
The project won 2nd Prize in an international competition. The concept was the brainchild of depA Architects and Pablo Pita. It’s a bold architectural statement.
Inside Quinta de Baixo the building is arranged with a clear circulation plan. A structural scheme helps to establish a spatial hierarchy. Two crossed and expressive beams define each floor. A vertical core gathers all the complementary programs. The design addresses the need for a new scale. It avoids mimicking the old manor. Instead it promotes an evolutive and flexible scheme.
But Quinta de Baixo is more than just architecture. It is intrinsically linked to wine. In 2012 Dirk Niepoort purchased Quinta de Baixo. He had a vision for the Bairrada region. He believed in the potential of its chalky clay soils. He saw the promise of the Baga grape variety. Niepoort aimed to craft wines that honored the terroir.
Niepoort adopted a style of minimal extraction. He picked the grapes early. He aimed for good acidity. This approach allowed the wines to express elegance lightness acidity and chalkiness. He uses whole bunches and short fermentations. Buckets are used to wet the cap. This limits extraction.
Quinta de Baixo has 20 hectares of vines. Niepoort also buys grapes from local growers. Around 10% of the vines are white varieties. These go into the blend. One particular vineyard stands out. It is a 1.8 hectare block called Lote D. This centenarian vineyard produces amazing grapes.
Quinta de Baixo produces incredible white Bairrada wines. Also Agua Viva a lovely sparkling wine. The Vinhas Velhas white ferments in old German fuders. This happens with very little sulfur dioxide for almost two years. It is bottled without fining or filtration.
Niepoort avoids small oak barrels. He prefers larger vessels from Germany and Austria. He believes that wood should not overpower Baga. He jumped into the Quinta de Baixo project with passion. He compromised nothing. He aimed to create wines that truly reflected the region.
Winemaker Miguel Silva helped Niepoort. Together they crafted compelling wines. These wines showcase the terroir of Bairrada. The Quinta de Baixo Bical Maria Gomes VV 2019 is bright and linear. It displays stony mineral characters. The Niepoort Quinta de Baixo Pinot Noir 2021 offers sweet cherries and plums. It has a chalky mineral edge. The Niepoort Quinta de Baixo Poerinho Garrafeira 2012 shows elegance and weight. It has red cherries dried herbs and spice.
Quinta de Baixo’s vineyards have clay-limestone soils. This terroir is perfect for the Baga variety. The vineyards are divided into three farms. Their ages range from 10 to 80 years old. They are located in Cordinhã Ourentã and Cantanhede. The winery is located on a hillside. This allows the wine-making process to be carried out by gravity.
Dirk’s passion for Bairrada and Baga dates back to the 90s. He dreamt of interpreting the limestone soils. He wanted to link them to the traditional varieties. It was a love at first sight. In January 2012 Niepoort took over the vineyards and the winery. He aimed to create something special. He wanted something typically bairradino. But it had to have the Niepoort soul.
So as you stand here at Quinta de Baixo consider its layers. It blends architecture and winemaking. It shows evolution and tradition. It epitomizes the spirit of Bairrada. Quinta de Baixo is a place where the past informs the future. Here innovation meets heritage.
