“A silent sentinel, isn’t it?” an elderly woman beside me murmured, her gaze fixed on the Pelourinho do Castelo. The pillory stood tall and imposing. The Pelourinho do Castelo in Porto isn’t what it seems. It dominates the Terreiro da Sé, demanding attention from every passerby. It’s a common sight to see tourists snapping photos. They capture its rococo elegance against the backdrop of the Sé do Porto. The Pelourinho do Castelo whispers tales of justice and power. It hints at a past where public shame and harsh punishments were commonplace. This particular pillory, though, holds a secret. Its grandeur is a bit of a facade. It evokes a sense of 18th-century authority. Yet, it’s a 20th-century creation. The Pelourinho do Castelo we see today was crafted by the Cooperativa dos Pedreiros. It was unveiled in 1945, a surprisingly recent addition to this historic square. The original pillory, a much simpler structure from the 16th century, stood near the Ribeira, along the Fernandine Wall. It bore witness to a different Porto. It was a Porto where the echoes of public pronouncements and the cries of the condemned mingled with the sounds of daily life. The current Pelourinho do Castelo is a replica, inspired by a 1797 engraving. It was erected as part of a larger urban renewal project under the Estado Novo regime. The goal was to create a sense of national pride. It meant emphasizing “patriotic monuments”. Ironically, this led to the demolition of a significant portion of the historic city center. The old houses, narrow streets, and winding alleyways were swept aside. They were replaced by the open expanse of the Terreiro da Sé, dominated by the “new” Pelourinho do Castelo. While it may not be the authentic article, it serves as a striking reminder. It reminds us of Porto’s complex history, of power, and public spectacle. It invites contemplation. It speaks of a time when justice, however flawed, was a visible presence in the heart of the city.
