In 1846, a simple wooden structure arose in Porto. It was named Teatro Circo, a home for equestrian performances. This humble beginning marked the birth of what we now know as the Teatro Sá da Bandeira. Teatro Sá da Bandeira stands as the oldest performance venue in Porto. It has witnessed countless stories unfold on its stage. The original wooden Teatro Circo eventually gave way to a sturdier stone and lime construction in 1867. Just ten years later, the current building replaced this structure. For a time, access to the theater was only possible through stairs from Santo António street. This was before Rua Sá da Bandeira was opened and the theater’s façade was built facing the new street. The Teatro Sá da Bandeira wasn’t always known by its current name. It was first Teatro Circo, then Teatro-Circo do Príncipe Real. After the establishment of the Republic in October 1910, it was renamed Teatro Sá da Bandeira. The theater has a capacity of 786 people. It became a stage for renowned figures like Sarah Bernhardt, Julián Gayarre, and Antonio Scalvini. On November 12, 1896, the Teatro Sá da Bandeira hosted a groundbreaking event. It showcased the first presentation of Portuguese-produced films by Auréli Paz dos Reis. This historic moment cemented the theater’s place in Portuguese cinematic history. In 2020, it was officially classified as a Public Interest Monument, preserving its legacy for future generations. Today, the Teatro Sá da Bandeira continues to entertain and inspire. Its rich history whispers through the walls, reminding us of the magic and power of the performing arts.
