The Statue of Eleftherios Venizelos, a smaller version of the one in Athens’ Freedom Park, stands as a testament to his enduring legacy. This statue, crafted by Yannis Pappas, whose father served as a minister under Venizelos, captures the statesman’s resolute spirit. The original, larger statue graces Freedom Park near the American Embassy in Athens. This bronze replica, originally erected in 1969, carries a unique significance. It connects Venizelos not only to Greece but also to the United States, symbolizing the strong ties between the two nations. The inscription on the plaque near the Statue of Eleftherios Venizelos reads, “Liberal Politician, Statesman, Social Reformer, one of the most prominent Greek and European Leaders of the 20th Century.” It’s a fitting tribute to a man who shaped modern Greece. In 2024, the Venizelos Foundation USA oversaw a meticulous restoration of the statue, breathing new life into this important landmark. The restoration, led by artists Antonia Papatzanaki and Vasili Vasili, ensures that Venizelos’s image continues to inspire future generations. Ambassador Ekaterini Nassika expressed gratitude for the restoration, recognizing the statue as a symbol of Venizelos’s enduring influence and a reminder of the strong relationship between Greece and the United States.
