On a spring day in 1928, the Monumento aos Mortos da Grande Guerra was unveiled. This solemn monument, right here in Praça Carlos Alberto, wasn’t the first attempt to commemorate those lost in the Great War. An obelisk stood here before, designed by architect José de Oliveira Ferreira. It was inaugurated on July 30, 1919, but met with disapproval from the people. They felt it didn’t properly represent the sacrifices made. So in 1925, the obelisk was dismantled, paving the way for this new monument. This structure, a mix of architecture and sculpture, is the work of architect Manuel Mendes and sculptor Henrique Moreira. It depicts a soldier, forever frozen in a posture of watchful vigilance. The Monumento aos Mortos da Grande Guerra stands as a powerful tribute to the Portuguese soldiers who perished in the First World War. It serves as a reminder of the human cost of conflict and the importance of peace.
