How long has the Menir de Luzim stood silently watching the world change?

This imposing Menir de Luzim also known as Marco de Luzim is more than just a stone. It’s a silent sentinel a testament to a time long past. Located near Penafiel in the heart of Portugal this megalithic monument stands as one of the oldest documented menhirs in the country. Imagine the Neolithic or Chalcolithic people who painstakingly erected this granite giant.

Its history stretches back centuries. First mentioned in 1864 by Simão Rodrigues Ferreira in the local Penafiel newspaper O Século XIX the Menir de Luzim holds a unique place in Portuguese history. It was one of the earliest documented megalithic monuments. Rodrigues Ferreira wrote about it again in his 1875 book Antiguidades do Porto and in the Anais do Município de Penafiel in 1880. Even José Leite de Vasconcellos a renowned archaeologist mentioned it in his work O Archeologo Português in 1895.

The Menir de Luzim’s enduring legacy is confirmed by its classification as an Imóvel de Interesse Público in 1970. This significant recognition underscores its historical and cultural importance. Archaeological excavations in the 1930s led by Joaquim Santos Júnior revealed a base of wedge-shaped stones supporting this majestic monolith. These weren’t merely decorative elements. They were crucial for the menhir’s stability a testament to the ingenuity of its creators.

The Menir de Luzim stands tall approximately 2.15 meters above ground. Its total height is around 2.5 meters. Its sub-pentagonal shape is striking. This unique granite monolith has no decorative elements. It speaks volumes about a simpler time. A time of profound connection with the earth and sky.

Further research and preservation efforts continued into the 21st century. In 2008 it became part of the Itinerário Arqueológico do Vale do Tâmega-Penafiel. A pedestrian path now connects it to other significant archaeological sites in the region. This makes the Menir de Luzim accessible and enhances its role in promoting the region’s rich heritage.

The Menir de Luzim stands tall. It’s a breathtaking reminder of Portugal’s deep roots. It’s a journey back in time. It’s a celebration of our shared past. It’s more than just a stone.
