From its peaceful location beside the Jardim de São Lázaro, the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Esperança has watched over Porto for centuries. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Esperança might seem unassuming at first glance. However, its history is deeply intertwined with the city’s compassionate spirit. The church you see before you wasn’t the first to stand on this site. It replaced an older temple which served the patients of the nearby Hospital de São Lázaro. Construction of the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Esperança began in 1746, supposedly to the designs of the renowned architect Nicolau Nasoni. Its elegant facade, with its curved pediment and decorative flourishes, hints at Nasoni’s signature style. Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by the elaborate Baroque altarpieces that adorn the interior. These intricate carvings are a testament to the skill of the artisans of that era and add a layer of grandeur. But the story of this church is more than just its architecture. It’s also the story of the Recolhimento das Meninas Órfãs de Nossa Senhora da Esperança. This orphanage, founded in 1724, was a beacon of hope for orphaned girls. It provided them not only with shelter but also with an education. The girls learned skills like reading, writing, embroidery, drawing, music, and singing. Imagine their voices echoing through this very space, filling it with a youthful energy.
