Gazing upon the Igreja dos Carmelitas, one might mistake it for a single, grand structure. However, a closer look reveals a fascinating secret. The Igreja dos Carmelitas is distinct from its neighbor, Igreja do Carmo. Construction of the Igreja dos Carmelitas began in 1616, commissioned by the Discalced Carmelite Brothers. The church’s granite facade, completed in 1628, stands as a testament to its enduring history. Three arched entrances invite visitors to explore the treasures within, each topped by statues of revered figures. Our Lady of Mount Carmel graces the central niche, flanked by St. Joseph and St. Teresa of Jesus. Above, three windows pierce the stone, bathing the interior in soft light. A lone bell tower, adorned with blue and white azulejos, rises to the left, a beacon of the church’s presence. Inside the Igreja dos Carmelitas, a single nave stretches towards the altar, lined with six richly decorated side chapels. The gilded carvings of the Baroque and Rococo styles gleam in the light, showcasing the artistry of the era. The bright ceiling, a canvas of subtle Baroque decorations, creates a sense of airy grandeur. The recently restored organ adds a unique touch, its horizontal horns projecting from the pipe area. Interestingly, during the Napoleonic occupation from 1808 to 1814, this sacred space was repurposed as a barracks for troops, a stark contrast to its intended purpose. Today, the Igreja dos Carmelitas stands not only as a place of worship, but also as a living testament to the ebb and flow of history, its walls echoing with stories of devotion, artistry, and even military occupation.
