What secrets lie hidden beneath the weathered stones of the Igreja de Santa Maria de Azurara? Right here, before you, stands a testament to time and faith. The Igreja de Santa Maria de Azurara has borne witness to centuries of history. Its story is woven into the very fabric of this charming town. Construction of the Igreja de Santa Maria de Azurara began around 1502. King Manuel I had authorized a new parish church to replace the quaint Capela de Nossa Senhora da Apresentaçāo. You can still see the image of the Virgin, nestled in a niche above the main portal, a relic of that older structure. The church was largely completed by 1522, except for the bell tower. That was a later addition from the late 17th century.

Look closely at the church’s exterior. Notice the blend of architectural styles? The structure is undeniably Manueline, but a sense of eclecticism pervades. The main portal, for example, boasts intricate grotesque motifs. This style, derived from Roman designs, became popular throughout northwest Portugal in the 16th century. Step inside, and the Igreja de Santa Maria de Azurara continues to captivate. Three naves, each spanning five bays, are defined by graceful arches resting on ornately carved pillars. The chancel, a masterpiece by master mason Gonçalo Lopes, is adorned with a stunning ribbed vault. Don’t miss the 18th-century tilework that graces the chancel walls. Created in the workshop of António Rifarto, it depicts biblical scenes in vibrant detail.

Look for the side altars with their 16th-century paintings. One standout is the altarpiece of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, painted in 1574 by Francisco Correia. And finally, feast your eyes on the high altar in the chancel. Crafted in 1720 by the skilled woodcarver Francisco Machado, it’s a breathtaking example of Portuguese Baroque artistry. The Igreja de Santa Maria de Azurara, a place where history and faith intertwine, invites you to contemplate its timeless beauty.
