Erected upon steps, stands a stone column. This is the Pelourinho da Póvoa. It symbolizes a pivotal moment in this city’s history.

Let’s delve into the story of the Pelourinho da Póvoa. This pillory isn’t just a stone structure. It represents the hard-won autonomy of Póvoa de Varzim.

Back in 1308, King Dinis granted Póvoa de Varzim its charter. This led to its establishment as a fishing village. However, in 1312, King Dinis gave Póvoa to his son, Afonso Sanches de Albuquerque. He then integrated it into the patrimony of the Monastery of Santa Clara de Vila do Conde. Thus it fell under ecclesiastical rule for two centuries.

Imagine the poveiros’ frustration. For years, they were under the monastery’s thumb. They yearned for self-governance. Finally, in 1514, their pleas reached King Manuel I. He granted Póvoa de Varzim a new charter. This was a turning point.

The Pelourinho da Póvoa embodies this renewal. It signifies Póvoa de Varzim’s renewed independence. The armillary sphere atop the column is key. This is the emblem of King Manuel I. It marks his role in this pivotal moment.

The armillary sphere we see today is the only original part of the Pelourinho da Póvoa. It was erected in 1514. The rest of the structure was rebuilt in 1854.

By 1537, Póvoa de Varzim was incorporated into the Crown. It was annexed to the Porto region. This granted it full autonomy.

The Pelourinho da Póvoa witnessed Póvoa de Varzim transforming into a prominent town. It gained its own town hall. It established a public square.

This monument has stood the test of time. It was classified as a National Monument in 1910.

The Pelourinho da Póvoa stands as a reminder. It is a testament to the spirit of the poveiros. They fought for their autonomy. They shaped their own destiny.

As you stand here, consider the weight of history embedded in this stone. It is a story of struggle, resilience, and ultimately, triumph. The Pelourinho da Póvoa is a symbol of a town that dared to chart its own course.
