Marvelous isn’t it? The Igreja Matriz de Vila do Conde stands before you a testament to time and faith.
This magnificent church isn’t just a pretty face. It’s a living storybook. Its construction began in 1496 replacing an older church. The original architect was the Basque Joao Rainho. Sancho Garcia and Rui Garcia Penagos followed. King Manuel I of Portugal played a pivotal role. He visited Vila do Conde in 1502 on a pilgrimage. He decided to fund the church’s construction. The first part completed was the head and apse in 1506.
The most significant works occurred between 1511 and 1514. The Cantabrian architect Joao de Castilho took charge. He is responsible for the portico columns arches. These features divide the side naves from the central one. The choir and high chapel are his work too. The intricate Gothic-Manueline vaulting is breathtaking.
Later additions include the transept chapels and the bell tower. Joao Lopes o Moco built the bell tower in 1573. Its style is late Renaissance or Mannerist.
Notice the exterior walls. They crown the central nave and high chapel with two orders of battlements. The axial portal is Manueline style. It has a three-lobed structure. It features Renaissance reliefs and Gothic pinnacles. A central niche contains an image of Saint John the Baptist. The coats of arms of Povoa de Varzim Vila do Conde and Rates are there too. King Manuel’s coat of arms is also present. The portal’s similarities to one in Azuaga Spain are striking. The large square bell tower is imposing. It is almost devoid of ornamentation except for the balustrade.
Step inside. The church has a Latin cross plan. Three naves are of different heights with wooden coverings. The high chapel boasts a Baroque altarpiece. It was carved in 1740 by Porto carver Manuel Pereira da Costa Noronha. The pulpit and side altars were carved in the first half of the 18th century by Joao Gomes de Carvalho.
The transept chapels also have ribbed Gothic vaults. The right chapel is dedicated to Our Lady of Good Voyage. It was built in 1542 by the Vila do Conde seafarers’ community. Its 17th-century tiles are beautiful. The left chapel is dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption. It houses a Gothic image of Saint John the Baptist. The baptismal font is Manueline.
The stained-glass windows are from 1909. They were made in Paris. The central window depicts a scene from the life of Christ. The nave windows show the life of Saint John the Baptist.
