St. Mary’s Chapel

Did you ever hear of a church that needed to be restored because of tree roots? St. Mary’s Chapel in Mucurapo has a fascinating story to tell. This beautiful chapel, dedicated to Our Lady’s Assumption, has been a cornerstone of the community since its blessing on June 14, 1931. It’s had its share of challenges over the years, from wooden floors giving way to tiles, to those very tiles cracking due to the persistent growth of the surrounding trees. Imagine the strength of nature, slowly but surely impacting this sacred space. The church, like our own bodies, ages and requires care. St. Mary’s, after more than 100 years, began to show its age and needed a serious refresh. The restoration, a five-year project, breathed new life into the chapel. It was rededicated on October 20 by Archbishop Jason Gordon. Relics of two saints, St. Jose Sanchez del Rio and St. Narcisa de Jesus Martillo Moran, now rest at the bottom of the altar. The dark, high ceiling, a marvel of workmanship, remains. Picture the builders, reaching those heights without the aid of modern cranes and equipment. Over the decades, St. Mary’s has been shepherded by many dedicated priests. From Fr. Curran, who served a long tenure before his assignment to Carenage in 1949, to Fr. McKenna, builder of the sturdy Mucurapo Boys’ RC, each has left their mark. Fr. Bergen, Fr. Mark Connolly, builder of Mucurapo Girls’ RC, Fr. Allen, Fr. O’Loughlin, and Fr. Hayden, all Irish Dominican priests, contributed significantly to the community. In 1950, a young parishioner witnessed a powerful moment at St. Mary’s. Blessed Fr. Patrick Peyton, having recovered from a serious illness, visited with the pilgrim virgin statue. He urged the congregation to pray the rosary daily. His words, “the family that prays together stays together,” resonated deeply. St. Mary’s Chapel stands as a testament to faith, resilience, and the enduring power of community.
