Envision, if you will, a sleek elliptical tower of blue glass rising from Independence Square. This is the Nicholas Tower. It is a defining feature of Port of Spain’s waterfront business district. Let me tell you its story.
The Nicholas Tower is more than just an office building. It is a symbol of modern Trinidad and Tobago. Completed in 2003, it stands 88 meters tall or 102 meters if you include the mast. It is the fifth tallest structure in the country.
Before the Nicholas Tower, this site was home to the Trinidad Union Club. This private institution had been here for 136 years. Imagine the stories those walls could tell. Until 2015, the club occupied the penthouse suite. It was a unique blend of old and new.
The Nicholas Tower was built to meet high structural engineering standards. It has a steel frame with concrete. The building also features a specialized glass curtain wall. This seamless envelope was developed with ABEL Bestcrete and their Canadian partners.
Notice the four-story podium. It occupies the entire site. Above it rises a 16-story curved tower placed diagonally. This design gives the Nicholas Tower its striking profile. The building rests on 357 prestressed concrete piles.
Each floor of the Nicholas Tower offers 8000 square feet of rentable space. Many notable tenants have called this building home. The Trinidad and Tobago Stock Exchange, Caribbean Airlines, and American Airlines were all here. Government offices like the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Office of the Prime Minister have also been tenants.
The Nicholas Tower cost about $100 million TTD to construct. Construction started in 1999 and finished in 2003. Kerrin Burgess was the design engineer.
The Nicholas Tower is an icon. Its elliptical shape and blue glass facade stand out. It represents the vision of a developing downtown waterfront.
So, as you stand before the Nicholas Tower remember its history. Think about the Trinidad Union Club. Appreciate the modern design. This building is a testament to Trinidad and Tobago’s progress and ambition.
