Standing here in Federation Park, you’d never guess that this tranquil neighborhood once housed a controversial chapter of Trinidad and Tobago’s history. This area, with its manicured lawns and stately homes, was once a site for internment camps during World War II. Imagine rows of barracks, surrounded by barbed wire, holding refugees from a war-torn Europe.

Federation Park was built in the late 1950s to house delegates to the Federal Parliament of the West Indies Federation. It was envisioned as a symbol of unity for the newly formed federation, bringing together people from different islands. But the federation was short-lived, dissolving in 1962.

The houses in Federation Park were then assigned to government officials, but by the 1990’s many were sold to private owners. Today, many embassies use the large, modern homes as residences for their diplomats. So while the Federation may have ended, the park still reflects the global connections that Trinidad and Tobago has.

Today, as you stroll through these streets, it’s hard to picture the fences, guard towers, and the anxieties of the families who were interned here. But it’s a reminder that the past shapes the present, reminding us of the complexities and challenges that have shaped this nation. You’ll find reminders of this past all around you; the names of the streets echo the once-united territories like Antigua, Barbados, and Jamaica. Take a moment to reflect on the journey this nation has taken and the rich tapestry of its history.
