A whisper of history hangs in the air. Archbishop’s House stands before you. Its elegant facade hints at the stories within.

This grand residence is one of the Magnificent Seven. It’s a true architectural treasure in Port of Spain. The Archbishop’s House is more than just a building. It represents the rich religious and social history of Trinidad and Tobago. It embodies the legacy of the Catholic Church.

Construction began in 1903. The fifth Archbishop of Port of Spain Patrick Vincent Flood commissioned the building. George Brown of the Trinidad Trading Company oversaw its construction. Completed in 1904 the house reflects a unique blend of styles. It displays Victorian elegance with subtle Spanish influences. The plans were drawn by an Irish architect. Interestingly enough his designs showed a distinct leaning towards Indian architectural styles.

Imagine the Archbishop’s House in its early years. A bustling hub of activity. A chapel and sacristy occupied the first floor. A summer house and stables stood nearby. Connected by a long gallery they offered convenience and seclusion. The house boasted a wraparound porch. Wide bays graced the porte-cochère. Numerous other bays adorned its sides. The house was a symbol of the Archbishop’s position. It mirrored the opulence of the wealthy French Creoles.

Renovations took place between 1968 and 1969. Sonny Sellier led the architectural changes. The renovations added a chancery on the west side. The summer house and stables were replaced by a modern apartment. The original double wooden doors were replaced by sliding aluminum ones. A significant change for many. Yet the heart of the Archbishop’s House remained. Its historical character was preserved. Monsignor Anthony Pantin the first Trinidadian-born Archbishop made it his home.

The Archbishop’s House continues to serve its purpose. It is the official residence of the Archbishop of Port of Spain. Its serene gardens and intricate design attract visitors from around the world. The Archbishop’s House stands as a testament to history. It stands as a well-maintained landmark. A symbol of faith and culture. A living piece of Port of Spain’s vibrant past. A must-see destination.
