Here before us stands St. Anne Church. It is a building of faith on Mahatma Gandhi Street in Port Louis. St. Anne Church is more than just a structure. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of this city.

While information about St. Anne Church is limited, we can explore the broader context of religious architecture in Port Louis. This will deepen our understanding of its place in the city’s cultural fabric.

Port Louis is home to various religious buildings. Each one contributes to the diverse heritage of Mauritius. Consider the Saint Louis Cathedral. It is one of the oldest churches on the island. Its history offers insight into the evolution of religious life here.

The Saint Louis Cathedral’s story begins in the 1750s. Mahé de La Bourdonnais wanted to construct a place of worship. Initially, he proposed a site where the Supreme Court stands today. This idea was disregarded due to potential restrictions.

Construction eventually began following plans from 1736. Chief engineer Charpentier de Cossigny designed the church in the shape of a Latin cross. Military engineer Dulac oversaw the works. The building was complete in 1756. It was not used for worship initially because it was requisitioned for military purposes during the Seven Years’ War. Cyclones caused severe damage in 1760 and 1773. Services continued in the Saint Louis Chapel along Royal Street.

Rebuilding efforts started in 1778. Engineer Thomas Dayot supervised the work. The new Saint Louis Church opened in 1782. The Saint Louis Chapel was then abandoned. Cracks appeared in the church’s structure by 1795. Services were halted.

After 1810, the island came under British rule. Governor Sir Robert Farquhar initiated reconstruction in 1814. The church reopened in 1816. A century later, demolition began in 1928 due to cyclone damage. In 1933, the new Saint Louis Cathedral was inaugurated. The most recent renovation occurred in 2005.

An obelisk with four lion heads once carried water from the Pouce Stream to the city. It was located in front of the Cathedral. This monument no longer provides water. It remains a reminder of the past.
