Slipping through time’s cracks, we find ourselves at the Ruine H…borstal in Port Louis. This isn’t just a pile of stones. It’s a whisper of stories, a forgotten echo of lives lived within these crumbling walls. The Ruine H…borstal, once known as the Bagne Prison, was completed in 1772. For over sixty years, it held fugitive slaves, known as maroons. Imagine the desperation, the longing for freedom that echoed within these walls. A notable prisoner, Prince Ratsitatane, a Malagasy nobleman and brother-in-law of King Radama I, was imprisoned here in 1821 before his daring escape. A plaque commemorates him and the countless maroons who yearned for liberty. The Ruine H…borstal also played a role in the influx of indentured laborers to Mauritius. In the late 1830s and 1840s, it served as the colony’s first vagrant depot, holding many indentured laborers. The building’s purpose shifted again in 1847. It underwent extensive renovations and became the Civil Hospital of Port Louis. This transformation, costing over £15,000, marked a new chapter in its history. The hospital served the city until the early 1900s. It even housed the morgue for the nearby Labourdonnais Hospital, a grim reminder of life’s fragility. In the 1970s, the building took on a new role, housing the island’s postal department. From the late 1990s until 2008, it showcased Mauritius’s postal history as the Postal Museum. The Ruine H…borstal is more than just ruins. It’s a time capsule, holding layers of Mauritian history. From prison to hospital to museum, it has witnessed the island’s evolution. Today, as we stand before these weathered stones, we connect with the echoes of the past, remembering the lives that shaped this place.
