Was La Tour Koenig Windmill always a silent giant, I wondered, as I stood before its imposing structure? Today, La Tour Koenig Windmill stands as a proud monument and landmark. It gives its name to the surrounding locality near Port Louis, Mauritius. This area, perched on a rampart, overlooks the neighboring areas of Borstal and Grande-Rivière-Nord-d’Ouest. It offers a commanding view of the northwestern part of Port Louis bay. The windmill itself, approximately 17 meters high, boasts a unique architectural style for Mauritius, blending Germanic influences with local masonry techniques using rubble stones and mortar. The main residence, originally called Grande Rivière, sits on the upper floor, with verandas on the ground and first floors. A large attic covers the inhabited part of the structure. Now a national monument managed by the National Heritage Fund, La Tour Koenig Windmill is located within the Nelson Mandela Cultural Center. The exact construction date and original purpose of La Tour Koenig Windmill remain shrouded in mystery. One theory suggests it was a fortification. Some locals believe it was once a hotel. Written accounts from Staub (1969) and Koenig (1987) shed some light on the Koenig family history. Jean Antoine, a German from Bavaria, and his son Alexis Henry, born in Mauritius in 1799, play a role in this story. Between 1826 and 1838, Henry Koenig acquired a 350-acre estate near the left bank of Grande Rivière Nord d’Ouest. This estate included the 24-meter hill on which the windmill stands, extending all the way to the sea. During this period, Henry built the family residence, Grande Rivière. He welcomed his father to live out his days there. The tower itself was built to comfort Jean Antoine, reminiscent of his Bavarian homeland. Curiously, the tower’s construction remains unfinished. A local newspaper attributes this to a worker’s fatal fall. Another theory suggests a government ban due to maritime safety concerns. Located near the port, the illuminated tower could be mistaken for a lighthouse, potentially causing navigation errors. The estate remained in the Koenig family for four generations, until around 1886. Its fate after that time is currently unknown.
