What if I told you that Khao Sam Laem holds secrets far beyond its scenic beauty? Khao Sam Laem, a part of the Khao Laem Ya–Mu Ko Samet National Park, is more than just a pretty spot. It’s a place where history and nature intertwine.

This Thai marine national park sits in the Gulf of Thailand. It is off the coast of Rayong. That’s about 180 km southeast of Bangkok. In 1981, Khao Sam Laem and its surroundings became a national park. The Royal Forest Department made the call. They included Ko Samet and nine other small islands. Mae Rampeung Beach was also included.

Khao Sam Laem Ya–Mu Ko Samet National Park covers 131 square kilometers. That’s about 51 square miles. It includes land and sea.

The park boasts several major landmarks. These include Khao Plet and Khao Laem Ya itself. Don’t forget Mae Ram Phung Beach. Several islands fall within the park’s boundaries. Ko Samet is the most famous. Others include Ko Kudi, Ko Kruai, and Ko Makham. You might also hear Ko Makham called Ko Kham. There’s also Ko Plai Tin, Ko Chan, and Ko Talu. Finally, you have Ko Klet Chalam and Ko Thai Khang Kao.

The park’s waters teem with life. Parrot fish and blue damselfish dart among the coral. Cuttlefish also make their home here. On land, you might spot a crab-eating macaque. The lesser mouse-deer also lives here. Flying foxes soar through the trees. Seabirds are abundant. Keep an eye out for the Pacific reef heron. Black-naped terns and Bridled terns fly overhead. Great crested terns and Roseate terns can also be seen. Other birds in the park include the Blue-winged pitta. Zebra doves coo in the trees. Coppersmith barbets add their calls to the chorus. The Asian barred owlet hunts at night.

Sadly, Khao Sam Laem hasn’t always been a paradise. In 2016, corruption shook the park. The park chief and 79 other officials were removed. They were taking kickbacks. Mafia groups controlled businesses on Ko Samet. Some were even linked to police officers. After the cleanup, revenues soared.

Khao Laem’s story is one of natural beauty and conservation challenges. Its diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes offer a glimpse into Thailand’s natural treasures. As you stand here at Khao Sam Laem, remember its past. Appreciate its present. Consider its future.
