The cool evening breeze whispers secrets through the ancient trees. We stand at the foot of Khao Rang a hill overlooking Phuket Town.
Khao Rang also known as Rang Hill isn’t Phuket’s tallest peak. It only rises 140 meters above sea level. Yet it holds a special place in the hearts of Phuket’s people. It’s a popular spot for locals to gather especially in the evenings and on weekends. Many tours include a quick drive up its slopes.
Three roads wind their way to the summit. One begins near the Rang Hill Dental Clinic. Another starts near Vachira Hospital. This road leads to Wat Khao Rang a temple easily missed if you don’t know where to look. A third path begins near Bangkok Phuket Hospital. It passes the Dairy Hut restaurant and the Royal Spa.
At the top a small park sits surrounded by trees and offering stunning views. Though not spectacular the panorama is pleasant. Couples often sit here quietly enjoying the fresh air. They try to ignore the occasional tour bus full of excited tourists.
A well-known restaurant Tunk Ka Cafe sits atop Khao Rang. It’s a Phuket legend. It’s been there since before mass tourism arrived. The restaurant serves delicious iced coffee and local food. It’s not expensive. The evening view from the steps made of old railway sleepers is incredible. The railway sleepers came from somewhere else as there are no railways in Phuket.
A newer and more expensive restaurant Khao Rang Breeze also sits at the summit. Its main attraction might be its excellent restrooms.
In the park a statue stands. It’s of Ratsada Korsimbi Na Ranong. He was Phuket’s governor around the turn of the 20th century. He significantly modernized Phuket’s tin mining industry. He also built the Bang Yai canal. He brought the rubber industry to Phuket on a large scale. Thanks to tin and rubber Phuket was already wealthy before tourism arrived.
So as you look out from Khao Rang remember the rich history. Remember the quiet moments and the bustling evenings. This hill isn’t just a viewpoint. It’s the heart of Phuket. It’s a place where past present and future intertwine.
