Is it possible for a hospital to hold more than just patients and medical equipment? Vachira Phuket Hospital, a landmark in Phuket, certainly does. Here at Vachira Phuket Hospital, on Yaowarat Road, the walls whisper stories of over a century of care. This isn’t just a medical facility. It’s a living testament to Phuket’s history, a place where royal decrees and community efforts intertwined to create a vital lifeline for the island’s people. Vachira Phuket Hospital wasn’t always known by this name. It began humbly in 1906 as Sukhaphiban Hospital, a project spearheaded by Phraya Ratsadanupradit and funded by local merchants and citizens. Imagine the bustling Komarapat Road then, holding this beacon of hope within its embrace. King Vajiravudh himself visited this precursor to the present hospital in 1917. Inspired by the need for a larger, more modern facility, he ordered the construction of a new hospital on Yaowarat Road. Thus, Vachira Hospital was born, a royal namesake honoring King Vajiravudh. It officially opened its doors on January 1, 1920, under the partial management of the Faculty of Medicine Vajira Hospital. Later, the name was officially changed to Vachira Phuket Hospital to avoid confusion with the Vajira Hospital in Bangkok. This cleared up any potential mix-ups, solidifying its identity as Phuket’s premier medical institution. In 1997, Vachira Phuket Hospital underwent extensive renovations. This modernization reflects its commitment to keeping pace with advancements in healthcare while preserving its rich historical legacy. Today, Vachira Phuket Hospital stands as a regional hospital under the Thai Ministry of Public Health, boasting 551 beds and a CPIRD Medical Education Center. This center plays a crucial role in training doctors for the School of Medicine of Walailak University, ensuring a steady stream of skilled medical professionals for the region. Vachira Phuket Hospital’s journey demonstrates the power of community spirit, royal patronage, and a steadfast commitment to providing quality healthcare.
