Did you know Ko Phuket is more than just a tourist hotspot? Ko Phuket is Thailand’s largest island. It is nestled in the Andaman Sea. Listen closely as we uncover the layers of Ko Phuket.

Imagine yourself as one of the first European traders. It is the 16th century. You see Junk Ceylon. That was an old name for Ko Phuket. Ships stopped here for supplies. However, pirates and rough seas made it risky.

Let us fast forward to the 17th century. Ko Phuket became a tin trading hub. The Dutch, English and French wanted a piece. King Narai even appointed a French governor to try to control things.

Picture this it is 1785. The Burmese are attacking. A British captain sends a warning. The island’s governor had just died. A woman named Than Phu Ying Chan stepped up. She and her sister Mook dressed local women as soldiers. This tricked the Burmese into thinking Ko Phuket was strong. The Burmese retreated. King Rama I honored the sisters as heroines. Their monument still stands on Highway 402.

During King Chulalongkorn’s reign, Ko Phuket became an important administrative center. It oversaw tin production in southern Siam. In 1933, Ko Phuket became its own province.

Now, let’s jump to December 26, 2004. A tsunami hit Ko Phuket. It caused devastation. Around 250 people died. Beaches like Patong and Karon suffered greatly. Thailand set up tsunami-detection buoys because of this.

In early 2020, COVID-19 arrived. Lockdowns hurt Ko Phuket’s tourism. By 2022, things started to get back to normal.

Ko Phuket is called the Pearl of the Andaman. Its wealth came from tin and rubber at first. Now, tourism is the main source of income. Many foreigners have moved here.

Ko Phuket is a mountainous island. Khao Mai Thao Sip Song is its highest point. Forests cover much of the island. The west coast has sandy beaches. Laem Phromthep is famous for sunset views.

The climate here is tropical. It is hot and humid all year. There is a dry season and a wet season.

Ko Phuket has a mix of cultures. There are Buddhists, Muslims and Thai-Chinese people. Many Chinese are descendants of tin miners.

Today, Ko Phuket welcomes millions of tourists each year. They come from all over the world.

Remember the brave heroines. Remember the tin traders. Remember the tsunami. Ko Phuket has overcome much. It stands as a testament to resilience. This island continues to evolve. Ko Phuket embraces its rich past. Thank you for joining me on this journey through time.
