A bone fragment of the Lord Buddha. That’s what draws millions to Wat Chalong each year. This isn’t just any temple. This is the largest most revered and most visited Buddhist temple in all of Phuket.
Wat Chalong officially called Wat Chai Thararam is a breathtaking testament to faith. It stands proudly a beacon of spirituality nestled between Phuket Town and Chalong. It was built at the beginning of the 19th century. Its history is rich. It’s deeply intertwined with the lives of two highly venerated monks Luang Pho Chaem and Luang Pho Chuang. These remarkable men led the people of Chalong Subdistrict in a fight against a Chinese rebellion in 1876. Their knowledge of herbal medicine helped countless injured people.
The main attraction is the towering 60-meter-tall chedi or stupa. This magnificent structure houses that precious bone fragment. As you ascend the three floors of the chedi you’ll marvel at the intricate paintings depicting the life of the Buddha. Large golden statues donated by devout followers fill each level. From the top terrace you’ll get an incredible panoramic view of the temple grounds. You can even see the Phuket Big Buddha in the distance.

The air buzzes with energy. A dozen small shops offer souvenirs and tourist goods. Interestingly those selling religious items are located outside the temple grounds near the gate.
Sometimes you’ll hear loud explosions. These are firecrackers. Locals set them off to make merit to show gratitude for wishes that have come true. It’s a unique and unforgettable experience. The temple often hosts funfairs. There’s food Thai games and big-stage performances. This offers a fun noisy and entertaining glimpse into Thai life.
There’s no strict dress code. But remember to dress respectfully. Remove your shoes and hats before entering any building. Remember to make a merit offering of lotus flowers and gold paper to the monks’ statues. Wat Chalong is a place of serenity beauty and profound spiritual significance.
