A single, silver tile glints under the Cambodian sun. It’s just one of thousands that make up the floor of Utumpho Pagoda, also known as the Silver Pagoda. Located within the Royal Palace complex in Phnom Penh, the Utumpho Pagoda isn’t just a temple, it’s a treasure trove of Cambodian history and artistry. The official name, Wat Ubaosoth Ratanaram, might be a mouthful, but it speaks to the pagoda’s sacred nature. It’s also known as Wat Preah Keo Morakot, or Temple of the Emerald Buddha. The Utumpho Pagoda houses a breathtaking collection of Buddhist statues and national treasures. Among them is the small, enigmatic Emerald Buddha of Cambodia. Some say it’s made of Baccarat crystal, others believe it’s Lalique. The debate adds to the mystery surrounding this revered figure. Another highlight is the life-sized gold Maitreya Buddha. Commissioned by King Sisowath, this magnificent statue weighs 90 kilograms and was once adorned with 9584 diamonds. While many of these diamonds were lost during the Cambodian Civil War, the statue’s splendor remains undiminished. King Norodom Sihanouk played a significant role in the Utumpho Pagoda’s history. He even resided within its walls during the construction of Preah Phnos. He also commissioned the inlay of over 5,329 silver tiles that give the pagoda its nickname. Surrounding the Utumpho Pagoda are murals depicting the Reamker, the Khmer version of the Ramayana epic. These murals, painted in 1903-1904 under the direction of architect Oknha Tep Nimit Mak, offer a visual feast of Cambodian artistry and storytelling. The Utumpho Pagoda stands as a testament to Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage and spiritual devotion. It’s a place where history, art, and faith intertwine.
