“Is there a cremation scam at the Sambuor Meas Pagoda?” a question that echoed through Phnom Penh not too long ago. The Sambuor Meas Pagoda found itself at the center of controversy. Let’s unravel the story behind this sacred place.

The story began when Im Borin, a prominent figure in Khmer astrology, organized a funeral for his daughter at the Sambuor Meas Pagoda. Following the services, Borin voiced strong criticism on Facebook. He claimed that monks were exploiting grieving families with unreasonable charges for cremation services.

Borin detailed specific expenses. The corpse ambulance charged him approximately $80 for a short distance. The crematorium cost around $700 including a coffin board. Even a bamboo stick soaked in kerosene was priced at $12.

In response, Venerable Kong Pisey, the chief monk of Sambuor Meas Pagoda, issued a public statement. He clarified that the pagoda only provided the cremation site. A funeral contractor, not the pagoda, set the prices. Ven Pisey stated that Borin mistakenly attributed the funeral package price to the Sambuor Meas Pagoda itself.

Ven Pisey acknowledged a price list for cremation rites at Sambuor Meas Pagoda. It included mortuary fees around $50 and cremation costs about $75. A pagoda coffin was listed at $250 and a corpse ambulance at $60 to $75. Ven Pisey denied the pagoda’s involvement in a cremation business. He urged Borin to correct his Facebook post to protect Buddhism’s honor.

The incident at Sambuor Meas Pagoda brought attention to cremation practices in Phnom Penh. Other pagodas shared their procedures. Chak Angre Leu pagoda clarified they only offered a yard for pyres. Families typically hired funeral contractors for full services. Chak Angre Krom pagoda reported daily cremations since the start of the pandemic. Donations averaged between $20 and $100.

The Ministry of Cults and Religions stated they have no plans to standardize cremation rates. Each pagoda sets its own prices or accepts donations. Discussions about cremation rites usually occur between families and the pagoda beforehand.

The story of Sambuor Meas Pagoda highlights the complexities surrounding funeral practices. While the pagoda faced accusations of exploitation, it appears a misunderstanding fueled the controversy. It serves as a reminder of the importance of clear communication during sensitive times. Sambuor Meas Pagoda continues to be a place of worship. It also stands as a focal point in ongoing discussions about funeral costs and traditions in Cambodia.
