“The Great happiness,” as it is known in Khmer, is more than just a name. Srei Santhor District Hall stands as a testament to the resilience and history of this region.
Srei Santhor District Hall is the administrative heart of this area in Kampong Cham province. It is a place where decisions are made that affect the lives of thousands.
The district itself is quite large. The 1998 Census recorded a population of over 90,000 people living within the district. Imagine coordinating services and governance for such a substantial community. That is the role of Srei Santhor District Hall.
Srei Santhor’s location is interesting. The town sits on the south bank of the Mekong River. It is roughly halfway between Phnom Penh and Kampong Cham. This strategic position has influenced its history. Srei Santhor was briefly the capital of Cambodia. This was during the post-Angkor era from 1431 to 1434. Back then, it was known as Srey Sarchhor.
The district governor, Heng Vanny, oversees the administration. He answers to Hun Neng, the Governor of Kampong Cham. Together, they work to manage the 14 communes and 86 villages that make up Srei Santhor.
The Mekong River is both a blessing and a curse. The low-lying geography makes Srei Santhor prone to flooding. The floods of 2000 were particularly devastating. Ninety percent of the land was underwater. Ninety-five percent of the rice crop was destroyed. Yet, the people of Srei Santhor persevered.
Even with these challenges, life goes on. The average household size is five persons. This is slightly lower than the rural average for Cambodia. The sex ratio is 92 percent. This means there are significantly more women than men in the district.
Srei Santhor continues to develop. The opening of a bridge in the neighboring Khsach Kandal district has improved travel. Now, people can avoid taking a ferry to Phnom Penh. This has boosted connectivity and trade.
As you stand here at Srei Santhor District Hall, consider the weight of its history. Think about the people who have shaped this community. The district hall represents the ongoing effort to build a better future for all.
