A shimmering gold stupa rises before us, a beacon against the Phnom Penh skyline. This, my friends, is Wat Preak Por Mongkol. Don’t let the relative quiet of this place fool you. Wat Preak Por Mongkol sits atop Phnom Penh’s namesake, Wat Phnom. This hill holds the very origins of the city. Legend says that in 1372, a wealthy widow named Penh, often called Daun Penh or Grandmother Penh, discovered four bronze Buddha statues inside a koki tree lodged in the river. She rallied the villagers to build an artificial hill to enshrine these sacred figures. This hill became a place of reverence, eventually evolving into Wat Phnom, the tallest religious structure in Phnom Penh. Wat Preak Por Mongkol itself isn’t the original structure Daun Penh built. But its connection to this sacred hill imbues it with a special significance. Over the centuries, Wat Phnom has seen numerous renovations and expansions, ordered by kings and fueled by the devotion of the people. King Ponhea Yat, who moved the Khmer capital from Angkor to Phnom Penh in the 15th century, is particularly linked to this site. He ordered the hill be made even higher. His ashes, along with those of his royal family, are said to rest in a prominent stupa just west of the main sanctuary. Today, Wat Phnom and Wat Preak Por Mongkol remain vital spiritual hubs in Phnom Penh. They draw locals and visitors seeking blessings and offering prayers. The hilltop location offers panoramic views of the city, a reminder of Phnom Penh’s humble beginnings and its growth into a bustling metropolis. So, as you explore Wat Preak Por Mongkol, remember the story of Daun Penh and her discovery. It’s a tale of faith, community, and the enduring power of belief, etched into the very landscape of Phnom Penh.
