Is it true what they say about the Silver Pagoda? Its shimmering façade hints at the treasures it holds within. Formally known as Wat Preah Keo Morokat or Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the Silver Pagoda stands proudly within Phnom Penh’s Royal Palace compound. It is a testament to Cambodia’s rich history and artistry.
The name “Silver Pagoda” comes from the over 5000 solid silver floor tiles. These tiles gleam under the soft light. Each tile contributes to a floor weighing about 5 tons. Only a small area of the tiles is visible. Most are covered to protect them.
King Norodom was inspired by Bangkok’s Wat Phra Kaew. He ordered the pagoda’s original construction in wood in 1892. The Silver Pagoda was rebuilt in 1962.
Inside the Silver Pagoda many lavish Buddha statues await. They are crafted from precious metals. The Emerald Buddha is among the most famous. This statue, made of Baccarat crystal, sits on a gilded pedestal.
A life-sized gold Maitreya Buddha is a sight to behold. It weighs 90kg. This Buddha glitters with 9584 diamonds. The largest diamond weighs 25 carats. It was created in the palace workshops between 1906 and 1907.
A miniature silver-and-gold stupa sits in front of the gold Buddha. It contains a relic of Buddha brought from Sri Lanka. To the left is an 80kg bronze Buddha. A silver Buddha stands to the right. Solid gold figurines on the far right tell the Buddha’s story.
The staircase leading to the Silver Pagoda is made of Italian marble. Murals of the Reamker decorate the surrounding walls. These murals were painted in 1903-1904. Cambodian artists directed by Oknha Tep Nimit Mak created them.
Wat Preah Keo Morokat is a special place. The King meets with monks here. Royal ceremonies take place here. Unlike most pagodas, no monks live here.
The Khmer Rouge looted many treasures from 1975 to 1979. Fortunately, they chose to keep much of the collection for propaganda.
